Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed skepticism on Saturday, December 22, over the terminology used to describe the wave of mysterious drone sightings reported across the United States. She questioned why the term “drone” is being applied rather than terms like UFO or UAP, fueling ongoing public intrigue.

The sightings, which began in mid-November, have garnered significant attention, with over 5,000 reports recorded along the East Coast, according to Newsweek. Federal agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), have confirmed the reports but have assured the public there is no cause for alarm.

Lawmakers have called for deeper investigations, but national security officials have stated that the drones pose no immediate threat to public safety and show no evidence of foreign interference. White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby explained to reporters, “We assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and even stars that were mistakenly reported as drones.”

Kirby emphasized that no anomalies or threats have been detected in civilian airspace. Similarly, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy stated that recently deployed drone-detection systems found “little to no evidence” of malicious activity. President Joe Biden echoed this sentiment on Tuesday, saying the sightings appear to be “nothing nefarious apparently” and that there is “no sense of danger.”

Despite the reassurances, President-elect Donald Trump and Rep. Greene have voiced strong opinions about the sightings. Trump took to Truth Social on December 14, writing, “Mystery Drone Sightings all over the country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge? I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!”

Greene mirrored Trump’s stance in her own Truth Social post, declaring, “I’ll shoot the drones down myself along with every other red-blooded, freedom-loving American.” She added, “If they try to tell us all to stay inside, stay home, shelter in place ‘FOR OUR SAFETY’ from the drones, there is no way in hell I will comply with that absolute bullshit.”

The mystery surrounding the drones, combined with Greene’s and Trump’s inflammatory comments, has amplified public concern and speculation. Federal agencies continue to monitor the situation, urging calm as investigations proceed.
