Harry Styles’ Sister Gemma Opens Up About Her Shocking Mental Health Struggles
Gemma Styles, sister of pop sensation Harry Styles, is opening up about her mental health struggles in her new book, Why Am I Like This? In the deeply personal memoir, Gemma discusses her battle with depression, suicidal thoughts, and a more recent diagnosis of ADHD.
Gemma reveals that her struggles with depression began in her mid-20s and eventually became so severe that she considered suicide. “I didn’t actively want to die… but I so badly wanted to opt out of what my life had become that it boiled down to the same longing,” she writes, explaining the overwhelming sadness she experienced during that time.
In an interview with The Mirror, Gemma admitted that discussing her personal life, especially her childhood and family, is complicated by her brother’s global fame. “Talking about my life, or childhood, or family means talking about people who the outside world are, let’s just say, very curious about,” she explained, alluding to the public’s fascination with her famous sibling.
Despite these challenges, Gemma found comfort in sharing her work with Harry, who was the first person outside of her publishing team to read the book. “It was nice for it to be a family member and someone who I trust, and also who I knew would be kind to me about it,” she said. Harry’s support gave her reassurance as she prepared to release her story to the world.
In an interview with The Sunday Times,In addition to her struggles with depression, Gemma also revealed that she was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago, which, in many ways, provided clarity and comfort. “It brought comfort—just in terms of having some answers and a different level of understanding of myself,” she shared.
Gemma’s realization that she had ADHD came after watching an influencer’s video on Instagram. She described the moment as eye-opening, saying it was “like reading a story of my life.” This prompted her to seek professional help, leading to her diagnosis.
Why Am I Like This? offers readers an honest and raw exploration of Gemma’s mental health journey, from her darkest moments to the steps she’s taken to better understand herself. By sharing her experiences, she hopes to shed light on the complexities of mental health and provide comfort to others facing similar challenges.
Through her openness about her struggles, Gemma aims to break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourage more conversations about topics like depression, ADHD, and personal growth.
