Johnny Depp Reveals Deep Personal Struggles, Compares Amber Heard Defamation Trial to a ‘Real-Life Soap Opera’
Johnny Depp recently opened up about the challenges of having his personal life play out in the public eye while promoting his latest directorial project, Modi – Three Days on the Wings of Madness, at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain. During a press conference on September 24, the Pirates of the Caribbean star shared insights into how he related to the film’s subject.
Amedeo Modigliani, noting that they both endured significant personal trials—Depp’s including his highly publicized split from ex-wife Amber Heard. “Each has their story,” Depp said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Sure, we can say that I’ve been through a number of things here and there. But, you know, I’m alright.”
The 61-year-old actor, who shares daughter Lily-Rose, 25, and son Jack, 22, with ex-partner Vanessa Paradis, reflected on how many people face challenges in life but joked about the extreme public scrutiny he has experienced. “Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera. Televised, in fact,” Depp quipped, seemingly alluding to the 2022 defamation trial against Amber Heard, which was live-streamed and became a media spectacle.
Depp also spoke philosophically about how people cope with life’s ordeals. “We all experience and go through what we go through,” he said. “And those things that we are able to live and remember and use, these are your stripes. You never forget them.” He added that many people, like Modigliani, struggle to express themselves while on the brink of “earning their stripes.”
The actor’s comments come as a rare reflection on the defamation trial against his former wife, in which Depp was awarded $10.4 million in damages. The trial centered around Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed, where she referred to herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” without directly naming Depp. Although Depp won the case, Heard was also awarded $2 million in compensatory damages after the jury found that Depp’s lawyer had defamed her by calling her claims a “hoax.”
Following the intense media coverage of the trial, Heard, who is the mother of 3-year-old daughter Oonagh, chose to settle the defamation lawsuit in December 2022. In an Instagram post, she expressed frustration with the legal process, stating, “I defended my truth, and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed.” She added, “I make this decision having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social media fodder.”
Depp’s legal team, in response to the settlement, released a statement saying they were “pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter” for the actor. Depp has since donated the $1 million settlement paid by Heard’s insurance to charity.
Before the 2022 trial, Depp had faced legal setbacks in his 2020 libel case against The Sun, when a judge in the High Court ruled against him. As Depp continues to reflect on his personal challenges, his artistic endeavors, like Modi’s, offer a way for him to channel those experiences while moving forward in his career.
