The esteemed NBA analyst and Auburn University alumnus has expressed his discontent with Donald Trump’s actions and comments, showing little tolerance for the former president’s recent statements.
On his weekly CNN show co-hosted with Gayle King, Barkley highlighted this issue by airing a segment where Donald Trump claimed that his mug shot resonates with Black voters. Barkley’s reaction to this claim underscores his disapproval of Trump’s attempt to garner support from the Black community through such means.
Barkley’s critique extends beyond mere political disagreement, delving into the broader implications of wearing merchandise that features Trump’s mug shot. His standpoint reflects a deeper concern about the message it sends and its impact on the community’s perception and political engagement.
“The mug shot, we’ve all seen the mug shot, and you know who embraced it more than anybody else?” Trump said. “The Black population. It’s incredible. You see Black people walking around with my mug shot, you know they do shirts.”
Barkley has a message for those that wear such a shirt.
“If I see a Black person walking around with a Trump mug shot, I’m gonna punch him in the face,” Barkley said.
King suggested Barkley retract the statement, but the former NBA great doubled down on the comment even if he gets arrested for assault.
“Oh, I mean that sincerely,” Barkley said. “I’m gonna bail myself out and go celebrate,” Barkley said.
Barkley said it was a shot at all Black people.
“If I was at that (conference), I would have gotten up and walked out,” Barkley said. “That was an insult to all Black people. … It’s not a fair comparison. He’s a billionaire. He’s had a great life. He’s been President of the United States. To insult Black people who have been discriminated against all these years, to put them in the same category, I was just offended.”
