Goldie Hawn, the beloved actress and matriarch, is embracing her role as a grandmother to eight grandchildren. In a recent interview on Making Space with Hoda Kotb, the 78-year-old star opened up about her journey from being a mother of four to a grandmother, sharing her insights on family, love, and letting go.

Hawn, who shares two children, Kate and Oliver Hudson, with ex-husband Bill Hudson, and son Wyatt Russell with longtime partner Kurt Russell, is also stepmother to Boston Russell, Kurt’s son from a previous marriage. Reflecting on the birth of her first grandchild, Ryder, in 2004, she noted how her roles as mother and grandmother briefly overlapped.

“When Ryder was born, Kate’s first, I still had a kid at home,” she said, referring to her youngest, Wyatt, who was a teenager at the time. When asked if becoming a grandmother had changed her, Hawn replied, “I don’t think I’ve changed at all. Being a go-go grandmother, I love it.”

She shared her perspective on the evolving family dynamic, calling it “an unbelievable weave that starts to happen when your children start to have children.” However, she emphasized the importance of boundaries, saying, “But they’re the parents. And what one has to be careful [about] is that we don’t want to be a horn that’s always saying, ‘Why’d you do that?’ and, ‘They should do this,’ and whatever.

So Kurt and I give them full autonomy.” Despite her joy as a grandmother, Hawn admitted to missing the hands-on experience of being a mom. “I will say, I miss being a mother,” she confessed, revealing the bittersweet aspect of transitioning to the role of grandparent.

Hawn’s candid reflections highlight the joy and complexities of family life as it grows and changes. Her approach—balancing affection and autonomy—underscores her deep love for her family while respecting her children as parents in their own right. As Hawn continues to inspire audiences on and off-screen, her dedication to her family and her zest for life remain at the heart of her enduring legacy.
