Jennifer Lopez recently opened up about the emotional experience she had while filming her upcoming movie, Atlas. In a behind-the-scenes video shared by PEOPLE, Lopez delved into the movie’s plotline, expressing her strong connection to the story.

Lopez shared that when she first read the script for Atlas, she felt deeply passionate about it, particularly the core friendship story. Directed by Brad Peyton and written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, Atlas boasts a star-studded cast including Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, and Mark Strong.

“At the end of it I was literally sobbing,” revealed the 54-year-old. The actress and producer mentioned, “It’s kind of a big action movie, but it has at the emotional core a story about love and friendship.” According to the official synopsis, Lopez, who plays Atlas Shepherd, is a “misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence”.

“After joining a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past,” her “only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it”. While talking about her movie, Lopez stated, “I always feel like the movies I do somehow mirror where I’m at in my life.”

Reflecting on her character in this sci-fi thriller, Lopez explained that her role involves a character who is accustomed to isolating herself from the world and dealing with challenges on her own. However, throughout the movie, her character learns that opening up to others, in this case, an AI, is essential for healing the pain from her past.

Lopez emphasized the significance of this emotional journey, stating that learning to lower one’s defenses is one of the bravest and most beautiful actions one can take, both for oneself and for others. Her insights into the character’s development highlight the film’s deeper themes of vulnerability and connection.

Atlas is set to premiere on Netflix on May 24, and Lopez’s reflections on her character and the story promise a compelling and emotionally resonant film.
