The Real Reason Behind Madonna and Sean Penn’s Divorce Finally Revealed
Despite their tumultuous marriage, the director of the music video that brought Madonna and Sean Penn together insists that the Queen of Pop was “genuinely in love” with the actor. In a new Sky documentary, Sharon Oreck, the producer of Madonna’s iconic Material Girl music video, reflects on the relationship between the two, acknowledging the intense public interest in their pairing.
“She was genuinely in love with him, but it felt as if the attraction between the two of them was fueled by the public,” Oreck explained. “He was the budding movie star, she was the budding rock star and the public demanded that they come together.” Oreck, now 69, went on to describe the whirlwind of their romance, saying, “It was like a bomb went off.
America’s bad boy and America’s bad girl.” Penn, now 64, and Madonna, now 66, met on the set of the Material Girl video and began dating in February 1985. Just six months later, they married in a highly publicized ceremony in Malibu, California, on Madonna’s 27th birthday, which coincidentally was the day before Penn’s 25th birthday.
The wedding was fraught with distractions, including the presence of numerous helicopters. Madonna, reflecting on the chaotic event, shared in the documentary’s audio that she “couldn’t hear the vows” during the ceremony because of the helicopters buzzing overhead. Her brother, Christopher Ciccone, added, “There were 10 helicopters hovering above everything, so you couldn’t hear anything. It got Sean riled up.”
Filmmaker Susan Seidelman, who directed Madonna in the 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, recalled that Penn was visibly irate during the ceremony. “He probably scribbled something like, ‘F— you,’ in the sand for the helicopters to read,” she said.
Christopher Ciccone further explained that Madonna likely didn’t want the wedding to unfold in such a manner. “She was trying to stop Sean from doing stupid s—,” he said. Reflecting on the chaos, he admitted, “Looking back, all the craziness that went on, I think it may have been a bad omen for the future.”
The couple’s marriage ultimately ended in divorce, with Madonna filing in December 1987. Her representative at the time cited “a series of cumulative pressures” that led to the breakdown of their relationship. Despite a brief attempt to withdraw the divorce petition, Madonna filed for a final divorce in January 1989.
