SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors and performers, has taken a stand following an incident involving Sylvester Stallone on the set of the Paramount+ series “Tulsa King.” The controversy erupted after reports surfaced that Stallone, along with an unnamed director, had made derogatory comments about the appearance of several background actors during the filming of the show.

In a statement shared via US Weekly, the actors’ union said, “There is no room on any set for disparaging comments to background actors or any performers.” “Though we have not been contacted directly about the incident on the set of ‘Tulsa King’ in Atlanta, SAG-AFTRA is committed to the safety and well-being of cast members on all productions,” read the statement. It also added, “SAG-AFTRA’s TV/theatrical agreements do not cover background actors in Atlanta,” but the union is here to support with guidance if requested.”

The issue came to light when it was revealed that an Atlanta-based company, which had been collaborating with the “Tulsa King” series, decided to sever ties with the production. This decision was a direct response to the behavior exhibited by Stallone and the director, which was deemed unacceptable by the company.

The initial allegations emerged from a private Facebook group named “Backgrounders – stories from the set,” where members share their experiences and challenges faced while working on various film and television projects. Amid the growing controversy, Craig Zisk, the executive producer and director of “Tulsa King,” spoke to TMZ on Tuesday to address the situation.

Zisk staunchly defended Stallone, denying that the star of the “Rambo” series had made any inappropriate remarks towards the background actors. According to Zisk, the allegations misrepresent the events that took place on the set, suggesting a misunderstanding or miscommunication might have been at play.

Despite Zisk’s defense of Stallone, the incident has prompted a broader discussion about the treatment of background actors in the industry. Background actors, often seen but rarely acknowledged, play essential roles in the production of films and television shows, helping to create realistic and dynamic environments for the main action.

Their treatment on set is a critical issue for unions like SAG-AFTRA, which advocates for fair and respectful working conditions for all its members. The fallout from the incident highlights the ongoing challenges that background actors face, including respect and dignity on set.

It also underscores the importance of maintaining a professional and inclusive working environment, especially on high-profile projects where the behavior of prominent figures can set a tone for the entire production. As the industry reacts to the incident, it serves as a reminder of the need for continuous vigilance and advocacy by organizations like SAG-AFTRA to protect the rights and well-being of all performers.

The union’s response to this situation will likely influence how similar issues are addressed in the future, potentially leading to stricter guidelines and protocols regarding the conduct of all personnel on set, from stars to the production crew, ensuring a safe and positive work environment for everyone involved.
