Acclaimed TV personality Whoopi Goldberg reportedly bailed on an episode of The View after learning that Mary Steenburgen, the ex-wife of her former romantic partner Ted Danson, would be appearing as a guest. According to Meaww, Goldberg chose to sit out the episode to avoid any potential awkwardness or confrontation.

Steenburgen appeared on the talk show to promote her new film Book Club: The Next Chapter, a sequel to the 2018 hit Book Club. The film features an all-star cast, including Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, and Candace Bergen, who returned for this lighthearted and fun sequel. The actresses engaged in a lively conversation with the show’s hosts, each showcasing their unique style.

Candace Bergen sported semi-formal attire with a denim jacket and lavender shirt, while Diane Keaton rocked her signature look with a plush long coat, black pants, and matching gloves. Jane Fonda exuded elegance in a pink suit paired with black loafers, and Mary Steenburgen looked graceful in a red and pink dress that complemented the group’s aesthetic.

The nearly 15-minute segment included a trailer for the new movie, which was shot in Italy, and was filled with warmth and camaraderie among the actresses. However, Goldberg’s absence was noticeable, reportedly due to her reluctance to interact with Steenburgen given their shared history with Danson.

Goldberg’s decision to skip the episode may also have been influenced by recent controversies that have surrounded her on The View. Earlier this year, Goldberg faced backlash after making comments about the Holocaust, stating that it was “not about race” but rather about “man’s inhumanity to man.” These remarks led to a two-week suspension from the show.

In an interview with USA Today, Goldberg later reflected on the incident, explaining that her comments were taken out of context and that she had never intended to downplay the atrocities of the Holocaust. “Recently while I was doing press in London, I was asked about my comments earlier this year,” Goldberg said.

“I tried to convey to the reporter what I had said and why and attempted to recount the time. It was never my intention to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after talking with and hearing people like rabbis and old and new friends weighing in.” Goldberg’s decision to avoid potential drama on the set by skipping the episode may have been a move to maintain peace and avoid further controversy on the show.
