Sarah Matthews, a former Trump administration official, issued a warning about the former president’s escalating rhetoric, which she described as increasingly alarming and reminiscent of historical authoritarian figures.

Speaking on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki, Matthews, who resigned on the day of the Capitol riot in 2021, expressed her concerns about Trump’s language, particularly regarding immigration. She referred to Trump’s claims that immigrants are “destroying the blood of our country,” a statement she found disturbingly similar to rhetoric used by figures like Adolf Hitler, reported HuffPost.

Matthews criticized Trump for exploiting people’s fears and anger for political gain, emphasizing the danger she believes he poses to American democracy. She highlighted Trump’s December promise to act as a dictator to secure the southern border as particularly concerning, viewing it as indicative of his broader intentions and disregard for democratic norms.

Reflecting on the end of Trump’s first term, Matthews pointed to his refusal to accept the 2020 election results and his role in inciting the January 6 insurrection as evidence of what a second term under Trump could entail. When asked by Psaki about the potential 2024 election matchup between Trump and Biden, Matthews stated her willingness to support Biden over Trump, prioritizing democratic principles over policy agreements, As reported by The Hill.

Matthews also expressed her support for Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, noting Haley’s performance in South Carolina as a sign of a Republican faction eager to move beyond Trump’s leadership. Her comments underscore a call for voters to critically assess Trump’s rhetoric and its implications for the country’s democratic fabric.
