Kamala Harris on Standby After Biden’s Shaky Debate Performance
Vice President Kamala Harris is on standby following President Joe Biden’s shaky debate on Thursday, June 27. As speculation grows about potential replacements for Biden, Harris is stepping up to support him. With names like California Gov.
Gavin Newsom and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer trending online, and some Democratic supporters have expressed frustration over the lack of mention of Harris. If Harris were named the presidential candidate, she would be the first woman and woman of color to hold the office of POTUS. However, Harris remains committed to defending Biden as his running mate, as reported by Politico.
Democratic strategist Michael Trujillo commented, “There’s nothing that she could do externally that would be wise. Her best strategy is to internally just be an amazing VP.” Despite Biden’s faint debate performance, marked by a raspy voice and occasional fumbling, he maintains he is capable and experienced enough for a second term. Michael Tyler, the president’s campaign communications director, stated, “There are no conversations about that whatsoever.
According to USA Today, The Democratic voters elected, and nominated Joe Biden. Joe Biden is the Democratic nominee.”Former President Barack Obama expressed support for Biden, writing on social media, “Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”
Harris has taken steps to mitigate any damage from the debate. She scheduled interviews with CNN and MSNBC as part of her damage-control strategy. An aide close to Harris stated, “She wanted to have an acknowledgment of what everybody was seeing.” The day after the debate, Harris addressed a campaign rally, saying, “The president said himself that it was not his best performance.”
She added, “I see Joe Biden when the cameras are on and the cameras are off, in the Oval Office negotiating bipartisan deals. I see him in the Situation Room keeping our country safe, [and] on the world stage meeting with world leaders who often ask for his advice,” as reported by The Globe and Mail.
The ongoing questions about Biden’s ability to perform in a second term have created unrest within the Democratic Party. Harris is working diligently to ensure that doubts do not overshadow Biden’s campaign, while also strengthening her position and trust among Democratic supporters.
