Nicknames often carry sentimental value, sticking with us through childhood and beyond. For Barron Trump, the youngest son of Donald and Melania Trump, his mother’s playful moniker has become a part of his identity, even if it’s a bit cringeworthy for him. Despite towering over his parents at an impressive height, Melania has affectionately called him “Mini Donald.”

The 18-year-old, who is now making headlines for his graduation and budding interest in politics, finds the nickname a bit embarrassing. Interestingly, while Donald Trump already has a son named Donald Jr., it’s Barron who has earned the nickname.

Barron, with his multicultural background, speaks both English and Slovenian fluently, a skill inherited from his mother. In 2011, Melania proudly shared, “Barron speaks two languages completely perfect. He goes from one thing to another, Slovenian/English,” as reported by Irish Star. Known for her protective nature, Melania has always been fiercely private about her son’s life.

According to an insider quoted by People Magazine, “She is a doting mother to Barron and very protective of him. This is nothing new.” The source also noted that Melania’s parents played a significant role in Barron’s upbringing, often being closely involved in his life.

“Barron is shy and reserved, and she has been a good mother to him all of these years. Melania is all about Barron and her family,” the source continued. In a 2012 interview with E! News, Melania described Barron as “a very strong-minded, very special, smart boy.” She added, “He is independent and opinionated and knows exactly what he wants. Sometimes I call him Little Donald.

He is a mixture of us in looks, but his personality is why I call him Little Donald.” While Melania may have coined the nickname, it was Donald who chose the name Barron, a name he had long admired but hadn’t used for his other sons.

During an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Donald shared the story behind the name. “It’s a name I’ve always loved but I never had the courage to use. I gave the idea to Melania and then I was going to take it away at the very end, and she said, ‘You can’t take it away! I’ve been calling him Barron while he’s been in my stomach, and you just can’t take it away!’”

Despite his height, which Donald joked about, saying, “I said, ‘You’re gonna be a basketball player.’ He said, ‘Well, I like soccer, Dad, actually,'” Barron has shown little interest in his father’s suggestions. Donald humorously admitted, “At your height, I like basketball better, but you can’t talk them into everything.”

Although Barron has remained mostly quiet about his political views, he has shown support for his father during key moments, attending the Republican National Conventions in 2016 and 2020. Recently, he was invited to be a delegate at the 2024 convention in Milwaukee, but his mother’s office declined the offer.

However, Barron made his first appearance at one of Donald’s campaign rallies on July 9 in Doral, Florida, where he was introduced to the crowd. Proudly, Donald remarked, “He might be more popular than Don and Eric! Welcome to the scene, Barron,” as the crowd cheered for the youngest Trump.
