Phil Ehr, a Democrat who previously ran unsuccessfully in conservative Florida districts, has declared his intention to vie for the nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.
As a retired Navy commander who switched from the Republican Party in 2017, Ehr asserts that Scott and the Republican Party have veered too far into extremism. He condemns Scott’s involvement in what he calls “Donald Trump’s war on the truth,” aligning him with other prominent MAGA supporters like Ron DeSantis and Matt Gaetz, whom Ehr refers to as the “Axis of Lies” posing a threat to the unity of America.
In the past, Ehr made two attempts to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz but faced substantial defeats. In the 2018 Democratic primary, he lost by over 20 points, and in the 2020 election, he secured the Democratic nomination unopposed but still lost to Gaetz by over 30 points, told WSVN.
As Rick Scott seeks re-election for his second term in the Senate after serving two terms as governor, Phil Ehr’s bid for the nomination sets the stage for a contentious political battle in the coming days.
