“There Will Be Hell to Pay”: Sen. Tuberville Warns of Another Jan. 6 if Voting Bill Isn’t Passed

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) raised eyebrows on Wednesday by warning that another Jan. 6-style riot could happen if Democrats refuse to pass a Republican-backed voting bill. At a press conference, Tuberville called on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to bring the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act” (SAVE Act) to a vote.
The bill would require voters to present a birth certificate or passport to vote, despite the fact that non-citizens are already prohibited from voting in federal elections. Tuberville claimed the bill was essential for election integrity, accusing Democrats of undermining the system, told VOX.
“The Democrats know better than this, but they want power so bad that they’re going to try to tear down our election system,” he argued. In an ominous warning, Tuberville referenced his first day in office, which was January 6, 2021 — the day of the Capitol riot.
“What’s going to happen if we do not show the American people that the elections are going to be fair and they’re going to be satisfied with the outcome, no matter whether Republicans win or Democrats win, you are going to have hell to pay in this country,” Tuberville cautioned. “It’s coming.”
He went on to suggest that Democrats might even welcome such chaos. “And I’m not so sure that’s not what the Democrats want,” he added. Former President Donald Trump has also pushed for the SAVE Act, urging Republicans to use the threat of a government shutdown to force its passage before the November presidential election. Tuberville’s comments, linking potential future unrest to voting legislation, have sparked concern and controversy, echoing fears of another political crisis if confidence in elections isn’t addressed.
