Trump Faces Backlash Over Claim Women ‘Won’t Think About Abortion’ If He Wins
In August, presidential candidate Donald Trump stirred controversy with his remarks downplaying the role of abortion in the upcoming election. He argued that it “would hardly be a big deal,” a claim that starkly contrasts with the campaign strategies of Kamala Harris and other Democrats, who have made abortion rights a central issue.
Trump later doubled down, saying that if he wins, abortion will no longer be on women’s minds. In a late-night post on his Truth Social account, Trump declared, “Women are poorer than they were four years ago, are less healthy, less safe, more depressed, and less optimistic about the future” , The Wall Street Journal reported.
He vowed to address these issues, promising that women would be “happy, healthy, confident, and free” under his leadership. He also claimed, “Women will no longer be thinking about abortion because it is now where it always had to be, with the states.”
Sarafina Chitika, spokesperson for the Harris-Walz 2024 campaign, fired back at Trump’s comments. “After Vice President Harris spent the week speaking about the consequences of Trump’s abortion bans and the stakes of this election for women’s lives, Donald Trump snapped,” she said.
“After ripping away our reproductive freedom, now he’s trying to tell us how to think. Trump thinks he can control women — he’s wrong.” In defense of Trump, campaign secretary Karoline Leavitt took aim at Harris and President Biden, accusing their policies of endangering women. “President Trump is right,” Leavitt stated, as reported by Fox News.
“Kamala Harris has made women’s lives more dangerous and unaffordable. If Kamala cared about protecting women, she would close the border and stop allowing rapists and murderers into our country.” Leavitt further positioned Trump as the clear choice for women’s safety, saying, “If women want safety, security, and prosperity for our families, there’s only one option — President Trump.”
On Sunday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also weighed in, calling Trump “deranged” over his abortion comments. “This guy just doesn’t understand what the average woman is confronting in her life in this country,” Whitmer said.
She praised Harris for her understanding of women’s struggles, noting her advocacy for healthcare access and abortion rights. “Harris’s commitment to ensuring women get the medical care they need stands in stark contrast to Trump’s policies,” Whitmer added. As the 2024 election approaches, the debate over abortion rights remains a defining issue, with both sides doubling down on their positions in an increasingly heated campaign.
