Former President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account late Tuesday night, launching a blistering attack on late-night host Stephen Colbert, calling him a “total loser” and accusing him of being overpaid and unfunny. The tirade comes on the heels of Colbert’s recent remarks in which he compared Canadian Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre to Trump, labeling him “Canadian Trump” during an interview with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump, evidently stung by the comparison, fired back just before midnight, criticizing Colbert and questioning why public funds are used to support interviews featuring him. “I briefly watched an interview of Stephen Colbert on highly government-subsidized PBS, and found it fascinating for only one reason — Why would they be wasting time and the public’s money on this complete and total loser?” Trump wrote, referencing a show that wasn’t even on PBS but rather on CBS, where Colbert regularly hosts The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Trump Claims Colbert is ‘Not Funny’ and Overpaid

In his rant, Trump didn’t hold back on his critique of Colbert’s comedic talents—or lack thereof, in Trump’s view. “He is not funny, which he gets paid far too much to be,” Trump stated, continuing with, “he is not wise, he is VERY BORING, and his show is dying from a complete lack of viewers.”

The former president even took the opportunity to praise his preferred late-night host, Greg Gutfeld, whose show on Fox News has often drawn comparisons to traditional late-night comedy programs. “Gutfeld, on cable, is killing him!” Trump added, implying that Colbert’s ratings are suffering in comparison.

Trump also suggested that CBS should consider replacing Colbert, claiming that almost anyone would do a better job at a fraction of the cost. “CBS should terminate his contract and pick almost anyone, right off the street, who would do better, and for FAR LESS MONEY,” Trump raged. He even went as far as to offer his own recommendation: “Or I could recommend someone, much more talented, and smarter, who would do it for FREE!”

A Final Swipe at Late-Night Competition

In typical Trump fashion, the former president didn’t stop at Colbert, turning his attention to Colbert’s competitors on NBC and ABC. Trump wrapped up his rant with a jab at the other late-night hosts, claiming Colbert wasn’t alone in his mediocrity. “The good news for Stephen is that the two DOPES on NBC & ABC are not much better than him!” Trump wrote, leaving no room for ambiguity about his disdain for the entire late-night landscape.

Backlash to Trump’s Rant

Trump’s comments quickly drew attention on social media, with HuffPost reporter Brandi Buchman responding sharply to his late-night rant on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The near 80-year-old convicted felon and sexual abuser Donald Trump is on his Twitter knock-off griping about late-night host Stephen Colbert,” Buchman remarked, directly referencing Trump’s ongoing legal battles. She further criticized Trump’s inability to move on from personal grievances.

Buchman didn’t stop there, adding a final sting: “Trump will never be funny or talented or skilled, charming or interesting or learned, so he (and his staff) tweet. That’s his skill.” She concluded her response by taking a swipe at Trump’s ego, writing, “His ego is so fragile. It’s like a delicate baby bird.”

The Ongoing Feud

This latest exchange marks yet another chapter in the ongoing feud between Trump and the world of late-night television. Throughout his presidency and beyond, Trump has regularly clashed with late-night hosts, particularly Colbert, who has been a frequent critic of the former president. With both sides continuing to throw punches, it’s unlikely this will be the last word in the public spat between Trump and late-night television’s most prominent voices.
