Donald Trump shared his wife’s reaction to an assassination attempt during a Pennsylvania rally earlier this month, and his remarks left many bewildered. The former president discussed the incident with Fox News’s Laura Ingraham on Monday. Ingraham asked Trump how Melania reacted upon learning that he had been shot and injured.
“What was Melania’s reaction? I hope you don’t mind me asking, I know this is very personal, but when she learned about what happened on that field in Butler?” she inquired. Trump recounted that Melania had been watching the event live on television when the shots rang out, leaving him with a blood-streaked face as security rushed him off the stage. Tragically, a supporter in the crowd was killed.
“She was watching … she was watching live, it was all over the place, it was on television, it was on your network, but it was all over the place and she was watching,” Trump explained to Ingraham. “And I asked her that, I mean I wasn’t there, I was on the ground — when the world started to, when you could talk to people and said, ‘So what was your feeling,’ and she was ah, she can’t really even talk about it. Which is OK, because that means she likes me or she loves me. Let’s say if she could talk about it freely, that would be, I’m not so sure which is better but ah, she either likes or loves me, that’s nice.”
This peculiar response sparked a wave of reactions online. “This dude is just freaking weird,” wrote X user Alan!. “He thinks his wife either ‘likes me or loves me.’ He thinks.”
“‘My wife either likes or loves me,’ is weird,” commented X user Stephen M. Thomas. “‘She can’t talk about how she feels about me being shot at’ sounds like indifference.”
“If you don’t know, it’s neither,” added Patti Vasquez.
Trump’s revelation marked the first time he detailed Melania’s reaction to the incident, although she had issued a statement the day after the shooting. “Let us remember that when the time comes to look beyond the left and the right, beyond the red and the blue, we all come from families with the passion to fight for a better life together, while we are here, in this earthly realm,” she wrote.
Trump’s unusual description of Melania’s reaction has added another layer of intrigue to the already dramatic event, with many questioning the nature of their relationship and his perception of it.
