“They’re Just Mad”: Former GOP Strategist Criticizes Trump’s Media Avoidance While Praising Harris’s Strategy
Former President Donald Trump is being shielded from mainstream media due to his tendency for what one former Republican strategist described as “barely coherent tantrums.” Tara Setmayer, now an adviser to The Lincoln Project, made these remarks on MSNBC Tuesday evening, arguing that this is the real reason behind the GOP’s frustration with Vice President Kamala Harris’s approach to media.
MSNBC anchor Katie Phang began by addressing the criticism Harris has faced from Republicans for appearing on unconventional media platforms. “You keep on hearing criticism coming from the Republicans and the GOP about the fact that Kamala Harris is going to untraditional media platforms to be able to speak to Americans,” Phang said. “I think it’s been a brilliant strategy to be able to reach voters that maybe aren’t the typical person that would be somebody listening to her in the immediate sense.”
Phang continued, pointing out what she saw as hypocrisy in the GOP’s criticism. “Just because it may be an untraditional place like a podcast, like Call Her Daddy, or even the Howard Stern Show, in my opinion, and I’m asking you, if it’s a conversation where she doesn’t get the questions in advance and there’s no issue that’s off the table, why does it make it less of a quality conversation?”
Setmayer, a frequent critic of Trump, agreed, describing Harris’s media strategy as smart and effective. “She’s legit meeting people where they are. The Call Her Daddy podcast gets 5 million downloads a week,” she noted. She contrasted this with Trump’s behavior, stating, “Donald Trump is ranting like a lunatic on a fake social media site that he created as a way to, like, hide money. Are you kidding? They’re talking about that? They’re going after Kamala Harris, who has gone on 60 Minutes, been interviewed by CNN, who hasn’t refused to debate, who does real interviews, and is also employing a new modern-day media strategy?”
Setmayer continued her critique, emphasizing that Trump’s engagement on alt-right platforms is not reaching mainstream voters. “Meanwhile, Donald Trump is doing things that are not appealing to mainstream voters, and he’s on alt-right social media outlets,” she said. “Like, the false equivalency here is laughable, and they’re just mad because they can’t put Donald Trump into these other venues because he can’t handle it. Period. And she can.”
Setmayer’s remarks highlight the contrasting approaches between Harris and Trump, suggesting that while Harris is adapting to new media landscapes effectively, the GOP’s criticism reflects frustration with Trump’s inability to do the same.
