Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) announced his resignation from the United States Senate in an official letter to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, effective at midnight Thursday. The move reduces the Republican majority in the Senate to 51 seats.

“To the people of Ohio, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate,” Vance wrote in his resignation letter. “When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I’ve made sure to live by that.”

Vance’s resignation comes just days before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. The timing contrasts with that of Vice President Kamala Harris, who remained in her Senate position until January 18, 2021, two days before President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

The decision by Vance, a prominent ally of Trump, highlights his alignment with the incoming administration’s timeline and priorities. While the resignation opens a seat in the Senate, Ohio’s Republican-led state government is expected to act quickly to fill the vacancy.

Vance, who was elected to the Senate in 2022, gained national prominence as the author of Hillbilly Elegy and became a staunch advocate for Trump’s policies. His departure is likely to create ripple effects within the GOP as the party navigates its priorities under the new administration.

Observers note that Vance’s resignation may also signal his readiness to take on a more active role within Trump’s circle. Speculation about his potential involvement in the incoming administration has been circulating, though no official announcements have been made.

As Vance prepares to leave office, the focus now shifts to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s decision on appointing a successor. The state’s political dynamics, combined with the reduced Senate majority, add weight to the appointment, which could influence legislative strategies in the early days of Trump’s presidency.

Vance’s letter underscores his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and his commitment to Ohioans. “I will always cherish the honor of representing my home state, and I look forward to continuing to serve in whatever capacity the future holds,” he concluded.
