Prince Harry, Meghan to steal the spotlight from Princess Anne amid UK trip

Princess Royal turned 72 years old on Monday, Aug. 15. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been accused of insulting and competing with Princess Anne by announcing their visit to the United Kingdom on her birthday.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stated on Monday, Aug. 15, that the couple will be visiting “charities close to their hearts” during their trip. Despite their noble cause, royal observers were quick to criticize the couple. They pointed out that the news was made on Princess Anne’s birthday.

On August 15, Princess Royal turned 72 years old. The royals were probably “not thrilled” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement, according to royal analyst Kinsey Schofield.

“Prince Charles is looking to slim down the monarchy… not add a competing Royal Family. Senior royals are likely not thrilled with [Monday’s] announcement,” she told the Daily Star adding, “Especially since they chose to do it on the Princess Royal’s birthday.”

However, according to Charlotte Griffiths, The Mail on Sunday’s editor at large, there is a reason why the couple chose to publicize their visit in advance. They apparently feared being embarrassed by lack of turnout or empty seats at the events they want to attend.

She thinks that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their itinerary for their U.K trip in advance because they will have a Netflix crew with them. She said on the MailPlus’ Palace Confidential, “I think they released these dates in advance because they want to give a chance for crowds to gather. Because, if they do have a Netflix crew with them, imagine how embarrassing it would be if there were about three people out there sort of waving.”

According to Griffiths, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want people to “get excited and speak about” their visit to the United Kingdom, and they want it to “look like a royal tour.” She also stated that they are unlikely to reconcile with the British royals. She believes they will “attempt” to see Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty, on the other hand, might not “encourage” the encounter because it would “feel like a carbon copy of a royal engagement.”
