U.S. Republican Representative Lauren Boebert has declared her intention to run for a seat in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District in the 2024 elections, aiming to succeed retiring Republican Ken Buck. Currently representing the 3rd District, Boebert’s announcement to switch districts has elicited a spectrum of reactions from political opponents.
In a social media video, Boebert expressed her conviction in the decision, stating, “It is the right decision for me personally, and it is the right decision for those who support our conservative movement. This is the right decision for Colorado, for us.“
Boebert’s candidacy follows Buck’s decision to step down, partly due to his concerns about the party’s shift towards far-right ideologies. The race for the 4th District seat has attracted a diverse group of candidates, including Republicans, Democrats, and independents, such as Tom Harvey, Richard Holtorf, Ike McCorkle, John Padora, Lauren Boebert, and Karen Breslin.
Democratic candidate Karen Breslin welcomed Boebert to the race in a video, also voicing her concerns about the country’s direction. John Padora, another Democratic candidate, expressed surprise at running against Boebert, acknowledging her popularity in MAGA circles and her potential to win the primary.
The 4th District encompasses a varied demographic, including Colorado’s Eastern Plains, parts of urban Weld County, Douglas County, and the city of Loveland. Candidates like Republican State Representative Richard Holtorf emphasize their deep roots in the region, with Holtorf highlighting his long-term residency, military service, and involvement in ranching.
Ike McCorkle, a previous Democratic nominee for this position, noted that Boebert’s entry into the race has brought increased attention and funding to other candidates. McCorkle’s campaign has seen significant fundraising since Boebert’s announcement.
Tom Harvey, while supporting Boebert’s conservative stance, believes she should represent a district where she currently resides. He stated, “In my eyes, she has been a great conservative vote and I support her staying in the 3rd (Congressional District) and fighting to hold that seat.”
Though not required to live in the district they serve, Boebert plans to relocate to the 4th District within the next year, further solidifying her commitment to the new candidacy.
